Every family needs a father figure. Tobias Wolff’s memoir "This Boy’s Life" illustrates a boy’s (Toby) struggle to find himself and a mother in search of financial stability and a complete family. As a child, Toby’s family was divided, leaving his father and elder brother on the East Coast and, for the most part, uninvolved in his life. Toby is resentful toward his mother for leaving his father and moving them around, fleeing her abusive boyfriend. The conflict mainly begins when she marries his stepfather with whom he doesn't get along. At the same time, he also has a close bond with her and is afraid of losing her love.
